Whether let down by schools, families or friends, many young people are not getting the education they need to keep themselves physically healthy and free from sexually transmitted infections, including HIV. Coupled with a poor economy and limited prospects many young people see transactional sex as a way to secure money. Our groups enable informed decision making, based on an understanding of healthy relationships. Furthermore we empower young people to earn for themselves reducing their vulnerability to sexual exploitation.
Delivered in Bulawayo, Bubi and Umguza Districts, young people aged 5-24, take part in girls groups and boys groups. With a curriculum approved by the National AIDS Council we use 'edutainment' to tackle difficult subjects through drama, music and poetry.
Our work has delivered stronger referral pathways and increased access to HIV testing, Anti Retroviral Therapy, family planning, and psychosocial support.
We have empowered 2,500 young people (so far) to make informed decisions about their health, relationships, and futures and made over 4,300 referrals for services.
Together, we are building a generation of young people who are informed, empowered, and supported to live safe and healthy lives
